HiRAD™ Process Pilot Plant to Run on Buffalo Dung

In the Anaerobic Digestion Community we are pleased to report new additions to the AD Process providers, as in this example.

HiRAD(TM) has developed an Anaerobic Digestion technology and is finalising installation of its AD pilot plant (November 2007) based upon its research, for sustainable disposal of dung waste from the Landhi Cattle Colony near Karachi Pakistan.

Landhi Cattle Colony is home to over 400,000 Buffalo, in the largest herd of its kind in the world.

At present over 8,000 tons per day of dung is produced. Until now part of this waste is disposed to the land, and part of the remainder reaches the sea after its highly polluting passage through ditches, causing severe pollution, plus the risk of bacterial infection to local residents and holidaymakers. Once in the sea these pollutants would otherwise also seriously harm the marine ecology without a plant of the sort proposed.

Once the current pilot stage has been successfully proven, the construction of a full scale plant is programmed and which HiRAD expects to become the largest manure biogas plant in the World.

HiRAD will use this dung digestor to produce over 118 million cubic metres (4.1 billion cubic feet) of biogas and 128,000 tons of organic fertiliser each year, providing employment for over 400 local workers.

The planned full scale HiRAD plant will support electricity-generating capacity of over 40Mwe, but could alternatively provide over 170,000 Kg of LNG, enough to keep over 1000 buses running around Karachi. (Bus manufacturers worldwide take note!).

This pilot plant project has taken almost 10 years development work by New Zealand Consultancy Empower, and NEC of Karachi and HiRAD of UK to get to this stage.

The project will be part funded by Carbon Credits which will be available to the scheme operators, and it will at full scale, prevent over 1 million tons of CO2e reaching the atmosphere during its operational life.

This plant will potentially become one of the largest ever CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) schemes. The electricity produced will also help stimulate the local economy, and provide valuable additional revenue for the operator.

Planned additional facilities planned by the owners will be a 20 bed maternity unit, a laboratory to enable improved milk yields and health for the Buffaloes and other facilities to improve the life of the people of Landhi.
