Renewable Energy Capabilities
Enviros’ Consultants and Engineers have a wealth of hands-on experience in the renewable energy field having worked with many of the worlds leading energy companies, utilities and the power generation sector; undertaking project development, design, and technical due-diligence assignments.
Our work has involved all the commercial, developmental and leading-edge renewable energy technologies and not being affiliated with any particular equipment, developer or services provider our advice is truly independent.
Enviros is able to offer technical assessment services in wind energy, combustion of solid biofuels, landfill gas exploitation, energy from waste, advanced conversion technologies, liquid biofuels, fuel cells, anaerobic digestion and combined heat and power technologies. We are particularly highly regarded for its work in the field of integrated waste management – recovering energy while maximising resource recovery.
Agricultural capabilities
Enviros is active in AD and composting development across agricultural sectors as well as the development of alternative agricultural markets for compost and novel crop development. We are currently working with RDS South East to roll out renewable energy demonstration farms.
Enviros have senior staff with experience of agronomy, farm economics, environmental impact assessments, hydrological catchment modelling and policy development as well as broader experience of environmental stewardship and rural diversification. Of perhaps greatest relevance, we have worked with the farming community in Scotland to deploy on-farm anaerobic digester and composting facilities.
Project management capabilities
We manage all of our projects using a project management system that is certified to quality standard ISO 9001:2000. We also have a dedicated team who manage large, public sector, waste and energy related programmes which includes organising events within those programmes. As well as for the New Technologies programme detailed we currently manage the Energie Helpline UK for DTI and Defra which provides advice to organisations wishing to apply for European funding within the sustainable energy field. We also managed the Community Energy Programme for the past 4 years.
Projects:
Anaerobic Digestion and Composting Project, Scottish Executive, 2003 - date.
As part of its research programme into diffuse sources of microbial contamination affecting bathing waters, the Scottish Executive awarded a contract to a consortium comprising Greenfinch Ltd and Enviros to install anaerobic digestion and aerobic composting systems on cattle and sheep farms in Southwest Scotland. This 18 month project has resulted in the design and installation of 7 Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants and 3 Aerobic Composting (AC) units on farms throughout Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire. The plants and the farm land involved were monitored for pollution pathways and pollution reduction. The project included the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of AD plant.
South Shropshire District Council Eco Business Park, Ludlow
South Shropshire District Council is building a sustainable ‘Eco-Business Park’ on the outskirts of Ludlow in Shropshire. Enviros has been involved in the £2m project from its inception, helping the client to shape what is considered to be work at the cutting edge of sustainable development and construction.
Enviros has advised the client to help deliver the project from the planning process through to the design and construction of infrastructure, energy services, drainage, waste management and landscaping this included the inclusion of an anaerobic digestion facility which is installed and running (Greenfinch were the installer).
Farming Without Fossil Fuels and UK Methane to Markets Events
Enviros participate in a Defra run events aimed at reducing the carbon intensity from agriculture. This work has inlvolved during November 2006 the technical organisation unbder contract to DEFRA on a two day Workshop on biomass CHP/AD opportunities on-farm called "Barriers and Opportunities for Agricultural Anaerobic Digestion".
Reviews of Renewable energy options
Enviros regularly undertakes reviews of Renewable energy options, some examples are as follows:
Private Farm Operation Limited Company (2006)
Enviros led an energy audit of a Farm and Estate and matched suitable renewable energy systems for on-farm implementation to meet various demand levels. A significant component of this was the evaluation of the potential opportunity for the installation of an anaerobic digester at the farm dairy.
Defra (RDS) funded work
Meeting renewable energy challenges (for a local authority/parish)(2006). We produced an incisive critique and alternative deployment plan for the Parish for delivery of 100% renewable energy and self sufficiency, and identified a delivery mechanism costing on 16% of the council's original plan.
Once again a significant component of this review was focused on the delivery of the Portagester AD solution concept and its viability for an upscaled CHP system.
Technical delivery of anaerobic digestion and Advanced Conversion Systems (ACS)
We have a strong track record in the commercial evaluation and due diligence of ACS for both waste and biomass streams, including ongoing work for Tesco (for both biomass and waste) and a number of other Food & Drink industry clients (commercially confidential).
Defra – New Waste Technology programme – 2003 - present
Our track record in technical delivery is best exemplified by our work leading part of the Waste Implementation Programme (WIP) operated by Defra. Enviros is responsible for delivering the Defra New Technologies Supporter Programme. This is a 1.7 million pound contract and involves providing a range of services and support to Local Authorities on new treatment technologies for residual municipal waste.
The new waste technologies cover Aerobic and Anaerobic Digestion, Mechanical and Biological Treatment and Advanced Thermal Treatment (ATT) including Pyrolysis and Gasification.
As part of this contract Enviros has produced publications on new waste to energy technologies, including ATT (pyrolysis and gasification) and AD. Training and education programmes have also been provided to stakeholders and inspections of European facilities undertaken to characterise performance. We designed and delivered a three-day training course for local authorities on all of the New Technologies.
The course was certified by CIWM and included all issues associated e.g. procurement, planning, bankability, key stages in development and timescales. The training courses were very interactive and well received and included role plays, games and group exercises. This work contimues with recent extension of our appointment through 2007.
Energy Recovery from food waste using AD process, confidential client, 2005 - 2006
Enviros audited the company's energy usage, the purpose being to examine ways that the use of external sources of energy could be minimised. We examined the raw materials that came to the site, their use and disposal within the production process of a food product and the ways that the waste products could be managed differently to recover some of the energy.
As part of the management of the waste product and the treatment of the wastewater, we studied the alternative options for treatment including anaerobic treatment of each of the waste streams.
Those waste streams were either in slurry form or in liquid form, however we found potential to recover energy as biogas from anaerobic treatment. Enviros proposed heated anaerobic digestion at 37 deg C for the high COD value slurry waste and Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactors for treatment of the high COD value wastewater streams. Block Flow Diagrams were produced and reactors sized.
The capital and operational expenditure of these processes were compared with the extant treatment and management processes, including imported energy uses, and concluded that significant savings could be achieved by using AD treatment and recovering energy from the process.
Process Design, Planning and Related Subcontract Consultancy Services to Construction Contractors
Enviros regularly bids with local, regional, national and international contracting organisations within Design & Build contract bids. Enviros, for example, worked with bid partner PIERSE Construction for the Western Isles Integrated Waste Management Contract which included an anaerobic digestion option.
