All designers and operators of Biogas Plants should have a risk assessment carried out to identify explosion risks, and where a risk of fire or explosion exists due to the presence of methane.
All risk assessments should be regularly updated, and where appropriate, risk avoidance measures put in place.
The location and extent of any Zones where a risk of explosion exists, for example around every flange in a gas pumping system, should be identified in site Health & safety procedures, with training given on appropriate actions during any emergencies.
In all European states the ATEX Directive applies and in the UK for example the Explosion Hazard Prevention Regulations are called the DSEA Regs. (Dangerous substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations.)
